03 // SHORT STORIES // DAMOCLES
If the city could speak, New Washington would scream.
New Washington clings to the world like a scar that never healed. Beneath low clouds and flickering billboards, the streets bleed neon—a peace enforced by riot foam, sonic cannons, and the heavy boot of corporate tyranny. Olympus Tower cuts the skyline like a knife, the obscene headquarters of Axion Industries.
Outside, a desperate crowd stands face-to-face with a wall of soldiers. At the very top waits a monster like no other, dressed in its finest suit. And at the bottom, stepping through the door, is Taewon Park.
In the next fifteen minutes, he will change the future of the American Corporate Zone forever. In this rain-slicked city on the brink of war, there are no second chances.
A 17,000-word cyberpunk science fiction story, winner of Silver Honors in the Writers of the Future competition in Spring 2026, placing in the top 2% of global entries.

Author’s Note & Disclaimer: Please note that Damocles is a standalone version of a central sequence adapted directly from the draft of Silver Ghost, an upcoming book in the Iron Empire saga. To allow the story to function as a self-contained heist for competition purposes, key worldbuilding details, character context, and narrative beats were heavily modified. The final version embedded within the official release of Silver Ghost will be structurally and contextually very different; as such, this specific story is considered non-canon to the Iron Empire universe, and should be considered an alternate timeline.
However, some key details may still spoil the plot of the series, so read at your discretion.
